Authentic Jewish communities condemn the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, by the Zionist regime of Israel.

This latest crime was committed amidst the ten-month-long genocide launched on the besieged Gaza, with tens of thousands killed in the brutal aggressive war, leading to a humanitarian disaster within the territory under siege.

This chain of tragic violence began with the introduction of Zionism and the occupation of Palestine. This occupation has destroyed the historic peace that existed in Palestine for centuries and has been the root cause of the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people, both Palestinians and Jews.

In a historic humanitarian visit to Gaza in July 2009, anti-Zionist Jewish Rabbis met with the late Ismail Haniyeh and emphasized the authentic Jewish opposition to Zionism and the hope to live peacefully as we did historically.

At that occasion, the rabbinic delegation conveyed a peaceful message from anti-Zionist Jews who oppose the Zionist occupation of Palestine since its very beginning. The delegation explained that according to the Jewish religion, Jews are forbidden to have their own sovereign state and are forbidden to kill, steal, or fight any nation. Authentic Jews follow Judaism and seek peace with their neighbors. These Jewish communities stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people until total liberation. The State of Israel and its aggressions does not represent the Jewish people, and the nationalistic movement of Zionism does not represent Judaism, which is a holy religion.

On his part, Haniyeh clarified his understanding in differentiating between Zionism and the Jewish people. He stated, “We do not consider the Jews as our enemies because they are Jews. The problem is with the occupation that occupied our land, sent our people into exile, and launched a war against us.”

On January 24 of this year, during the Freedom for Palestine conference in Istanbul, Haniyeh reiterated to a delegation of Jewish rabbis that the Palestinian struggle is aimed solely at liberation from occupation and not against the Jewish people.

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to his family, to the Palestinian people, and to every single victim of the cycle of bloodshed in Palestine, which is caused only by the very existence of Zionism and the occupation of Palestine.

Our sincere prayer is for the speedy and peaceful end to the criminal occupation, the restoration of peace, and a totally free Palestine.
