Israeli Police Raid And Target Anti-Zionist Jews and Remove Palestinian Flags

In the early hours of Thursday morning, May 22, 2025, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Israeli police forces conducted a raid on the historic Mea Shearim neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem. Known as one of the city’s oldest and most religiously significant areas, Mea Shearim is home to a largely Orthodox Jewish population that has long been known for its strong anti-Zionist stance.
During the operation, police forcibly removed Palestinian flags that had been displayed on walls throughout the neighborhood. In a provocative act, officers proceeded to spray-paint over the Palestinian symbols with colors resembling the Israeli national flag. Residents condemned the act as both a political and religious violation—an aggressive move against a community that rejects Zionism on ideological and theological grounds.
Mea Shearim hosts a diverse range of anti-Zionist Jewish groups, including the well-known Neturei Karta, who have consistently opposed the existence of the State of Israel, viewing it as a illegitimate entity contrary to traditional Jewish teachings. Despite being ethnically Jewish, these communities face consistent harassment and surveillance by Israeli authorities due to their refusal to recognize the Zionist state.
Rabbi Condemns Police Incursion
American Rabbi Joseph Kohn, a prominent leader within the Neturei Karta movement, strongly criticized the police action. He stated:
“The Zionist police are unacceptable within the anti-Zionist community. Had they arrived in daylight, there would have certainly been confrontations—just like what happened recently when Ben Gvir entered the anti-Zionist neighborhood in Beit Shemesh.”
He added that the removal of Palestinian flags demonstrates how deeply the Zionist regime feels threatened by any expression of solidarity with Palestine—even from within segments of the Jewish population.
One of the residents from the anti-Zionist community in Mea Shearim told the media following the raid that the Palestinian flags will return to their walls just as before — and that Israeli flags would be removed from their neighborhood.
