On Monday, January 6, 2025, hundreds of protesters, including healthcare workers, medics, and New Yorkers, gathered outside NYU Tisch Hospital on First Avenue to shed light on the dire conditions faced by healthcare workers in Gaza. These individuals risk their lives to provide care under the constant threat of Israeli bombings.

The protest followed Israel’s recent bombing of the last functioning hospital in Gaza, Kamal Adwan Hospital, and the arrest of its director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

Nerdeen Kiswani, a leader from Within Our Lifetime, declared at the rally: “We gathered at the hospital to show our admiration for Gaza’s healthcare workers and to let the world know what doctors in Gaza are enduring.”

Hundreds of participants took the day off work as a symbolic act, declaring themselves “sick from Israel’s genocide.”

Protesters marched to Union Square, joining the global call to end violence against Gaza’s medical facilities. The “Sick from Genocide” protest demanded an immediate halt to the bombing of Gaza’s hospitals and the release of Dr. Abu Safiya and over 450 healthcare workers detained by Israeli forces, and the end to the occupation of Palestine .

The protest was attended by anti-Zionist Jews who condemned Israel’s actions. Rabbi Yisroel Dovid Weiss addressed the crowd, stating, “We will not be silent. It is our obligation as Jewish people to speak out. Zionism and the state of Israel stand in total contrast to Judaism and the Jewish religion.”

After speeches by doctors and leaders from various organizations, the crowd marched to Union Square. Despite the freezing cold, the protest ended at nightfall with a collective commitment to continue showing solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine.
